Ministry of Health and GovTech Singapore have jointly developed an app called TraceTogether to support Singapore’s fight against COVID-19. TraceTogether is intended to speed up the Ministry of Health’s contact tracing processes by using mobile phone of a COVID-19 patient to identify other nearby phones with the app installed. This helps the Ministry of Health to track close contacts of the COVID-19 patient who need to be quarantined and helps prevent the spread of the disease.
TraceTogether has a hybrid model comprises decentralised contact logging and centralised contact tracing & follow-up. Upon user consent, the logs stored securely and privately on the user’s phone will be sent to the Ministry of Health and can only be accessed by the contact tracers there. Having a central authority to receive, process and use the data in the logs is necessary for the current implementation of TraceTogether to work.
GovTech is currently working on reference protocol documents and a reference implementation of BlueTrace, the technology underlying TraceTogether, for adoption outside of Singapore, so that others may adapt BlueTrace to their own context. More details on the BlueTrace technology underlying TraceTogether and further information on TraceTogether can be found here: https://bluetrace.io.
